Fulfilling the Promise: Securing the Future of Adolescent Mental Health Services

Thank you to the many community members who rose to Mary and Doug Scrivner’s $1 million challenge to create an endowment for ASPIRE, El Camino Health’s adolescent mental health program.  The challenge has been fulfilled.

ASPIRE, which stands for After-School Program Interventions and Resiliency Education, is an intensive outpatient therapy program for youth and young adults with significant anxiety or depression and at risk of harming themselves.   Led by a psychiatrist who specializes in child-adolescent behavior, the structured, multi-week program teaches participants skills needed to succeed in school and in life:  emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.  The rigorous curriculum is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which means youth who complete it can receive academic credit.

Donations provide crucial funding that enables El Camino Health to treat patients regardless of insurance reimbursement or ability to pay.  They allow the hospital to provide services that are above and beyond the norm, and they fueled ASPIRE’s expansion from one track for high school students to five different programs at two different locations serving youth and young adults ages 11 to 25.

Even though the Scrivner Challenge has been fulfilled, donations to the endowment remain important to secure ASPIRE’s future.  The larger the endowment, the more flexibility the behavioral health team will have to meet newly emerging needs.   Your gift will enable this work to continue.
